What students learn
Students learn a wide range of subjects in the NSW curriculum. They build skills, think creatively and prepare for life beyond school. Explore how we teach the NSW curriculum through key learning areas.
At Dural Public School, we deliver a comprehensive and engaging Mathematics program aligned with the NSW Mathematics Curriculum and the Department of Education’s current numeracy unit guides. Mathematics is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10, and our teaching focuses on developing students' fluency, understanding, reasoning, problem-solving, and communication skills across the three key strands: Number and Algebra, Measurement and Space, and Statistics and Probability.
Our evidence-based programs support students in making meaningful connections between mathematical concepts and real-life contexts. Through rich tasks, hands-on resources, and targeted discussion, students are encouraged to think deeply and work mathematically. We prioritise reasoning and critical thinking, offering open-ended problems and differentiated tasks to challenge learners at all levels—not by giving more work to high achievers, but by providing deeper and more complex learning opportunities within the same topic.
Classrooms are dynamic and interactive, using tools such as mini whiteboards, write-and-wipe sleeves, physical manipulatives, and collaborative discussions to move beyond traditional rote learning. This approach fosters confident, curious, and capable mathematicians who are well-equipped for future learning.
The teaching of Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE) is guided by the NSW Curriculum, with History and Geography as mandatory subjects from Kindergarten to Year 10. Through these learning areas, students develop a deep understanding of people, communities, cultures, environments, and events (past and present). They learn to think critically and ethically as they research, gather and analyse information, ask questions, make informed judgements, and communicate their ideas through a range of writing and presentation styles.
Our updated HSIE programs reflect the latest curriculum developments, designed to strengthen student engagement, motivation, and meaningful learning. Students explore historical and geographical concepts and skills through rich classroom learning supported by excursions and incursions, which help connect their learning to real-world experiences. We place a strong emphasis on teaching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures with respect and authenticity, ensuring students gain a deeper appreciation of Australia's diverse heritage.
Science and Technology is a mandatory key learning area for all students from Kindergarten to Year 6 at Dural Public School. Our program is designed to spark curiosity and build understanding as students explore both the natural and made worlds. Aligned with the NSW Curriculum, students develop scientific and technological skills by engaging in hands-on investigations, exploring evidence, questioning the world around them, and applying their learning to real-world problems.
Through practical experiments and inquiry-based learning, students learn to question, hypothesise, test and evaluate, becoming active, young scientists and problem solvers. Our technology programs further enhance digital capabilities, with tailored experiences such as Tech Club (K–2), classes on website design (Years 3–4) and SCOPE ITdigital learning sessions (Years 5–6). These programs ensure our students are digitally confident and prepared for the future.
Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) is a vital part of the curriculum and is mandatory for all students from Kindergarten to Year 10. At Dural Public School, our PDHPE program is designed to support the health, safety, wellbeing, and physical development of every student. Through engaging lessons and activities, students learn how to build respectful relationships, stay safe both offline and online, understand their personal identity, and develop important self-management and interpersonal skills.
At the beginning of the year, we teach Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) to help students understand school expectations and build a supportive classroom environment. Students also participate in the Anxiety Project, where they learn about how their brain responds to different situations and develop strategies for resilience, emotional regulation, and wellbeing. As part of the Department of Education’s requirements, students complete the mandatory Child Protection unit, and also explore key safety topics including sun safety, water safety, road, bus, car and bike safety, and how to make safe choices around drugs, alcohol, and peer pressure.
Alongside health and personal development, students take part in regular, enjoyable physical activities that build their confidence, coordination, and fitness, encouraging a lifelong love of movement and healthy living. Dural Public School also offers a paid sport program twice a year, including gymnastics and athletics, to further enhance students’ physical development and enjoyment of sport.
Creative Arts is a mandatory learning area for all students from Kindergarten to Year 6, and at Dural Public School we are proud to offer a rich and engaging program across all four art forms: visual arts, music, dance, and drama. Through these experiences, students develop essential skills in appreciating, composing, making, performing, and responding to artworks in ways that foster creativity, imagination, and confidence.
Our high-profile Visual Arts program provides every student with an 80-minute specialist session each week. In a well-resourced studio equipped with an interactive whiteboard, two pottery wheels, and a kiln, students explore a wide range of materials and techniques, including painting, drawing, pottery, silk screening, and plaster work. Lessons focus on individual learning, allowing students to experiment, express themselves creatively, and develop a deeper understanding of artists and their work through discussion and interpretation.
In Music, students enjoy a 40-minute session each week with a specialist music teacher, where they learn to compose, perform, and appreciate music using a variety of instruments and digital technologies. Our students also explore dance by learning traditional folk dances and creating their own choreographed movements to music, encouraging physical expression and cultural appreciation.
Drama is celebrated at Dural through both classroom learning and extracurricular opportunities. Students participate in K–2 and 3–6 drama clubs during lunchtimes, as well as engaging in class and stage-based productions, skits, and short plays that are often integrated across other curriculum areas.
Creative Arts at Dural Public School not only nurtures artistic skills but also builds students’ confidence, teamwork, and joy in self-expression.
